The “Generations Clubs – Outdoor Non-Formal Education for Children with Teachers’ Support” Project Concludes
The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation, in partnership with Secondary School No. 4 Turnu Măgurele and Secondary School No. 1 Islaz, Teleorman County, announces the completion of the project “Generations Clubs – Outdoor Non-Formal Education for Children with Teachers’ Support,” financed by the European Social Fund through the Human Capital Operational Programme 2014–2020.
Between November 9, 2022 – December 31, 2023, within the project a series of activities were carried out with the aim of reducing school dropout in Teleorman County and strengthening the premises for shaping a future in which supported children can capitalize on their potential and contribute to the development of the local community.
Thus, in the first part of the project, 40 professionals – teaching and support staff – from the two school units were involved in training activities in the field of outdoor non-formal education, for improving competencies and developing new professional skills in working with students. This involved graduating from a continuing training program in qualitative and inclusive non-formal education, approved by the Ministry of Education, with a duration of 80 hours and 20 professional credits, as well as participation in two trainings on the following topics: implementation of intergenerational activities and development of children’s socio-emotional competencies.
The teaching staff improved their competencies and abilities in working with children, being able to provide quality educational services adapted to their needs. Thus, starting March 1, 2023, they began their activities within the project, as experts, carrying out specific activities with the 335 beneficiary students from the two partner schools:
– 80 students from the 4th and 8th grades were involved in school preparation and guidance activities in order to facilitate the school transition to a new educational cycle and avoid educational risk. In this regard, activities were initiated to familiarize students with teachers and subjects from the high school cycle. Debates and discussions took place to increase self-esteem, self-confidence, and reduce anxiety. Non-formal meetings were organized between children and teachers of Romanian language, mathematics, history, and geography, with the aim of awakening students’ interest in the subjects taught by them. Visits were made to high schools in Turnu Măgurele, in order to support future lower secondary graduates in familiarizing themselves with the next educational stage: presentation of how high school activities are conducted, grading methods, benefits and responsibilities.
– 95 students from primary and lower secondary education participated in interdisciplinary programs for preventing and improving functional illiteracy. The teachers responsible for implementing these activities organized activities meant to encourage children to express themselves through the universal language of art: music, poetry, or visual creation. The purpose of the activities was centered on valuing students’ creative potential, stimulating their abilities not only through classroom activities, but also through their participation in extracurricular activities.
– 120 children from the two partner schools were involved in socio-emotional development activities in order to combat discrimination, increase self-esteem, and develop communication and relationship skills. Through games, discussions, and storytelling, socio-emotional development experts carried out activities focused on: getting to know each other and mutual understanding, developing group cohesion, communication and creativity, activating and optimizing creative and integrative resources, developing the capacity to express feelings and emotions, increasing self-esteem and self-knowledge.
Starting June 1, 2023, depending on the needs, wishes, and aptitudes identified among the 335 children in the project’s target group, they were involved in non-formal activity clubs:
- craft clubs: handicrafts, sewing, weaving, knitting
- creative clubs: drawing, painting, handmade decorative objects
- artistic clubs: dance, choir, music, theatre
- sports clubs: athletics, football, handball, chess
– 16 seniors and 120 children from the primary and lower secondary cycles, from the two schools, carried out intergenerational activities, organized in the form of “Life Stories”, among the most diverse:
- creative writing workshops – journal pages
- etiquette workshops
- reconstruction of a community: “The Art of Theatre, Past and Present”, “In the World of Stories”
