40 underprivileged children from Cluj County, supported with school scholarships
February 6, 2020
A new school dropout prevention project was initiated in Cluj County to support children from families with precarious living conditions or who are facing difficult life situations, starting in early 2020. Throughout the year, 40 children from disadvantaged communities will receive social scholarships to cover costs for school supplies, clothing and footwear, sufficient food, personal and household hygiene, and those who successfully complete the school year will go to their first summer camp. The project in Cluj County is implemented by the Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation and supported by Yardi Romania.
In Romania, 1 in 5 children drop out of school due to poverty and poor living conditions. The Special Fund for Children promptly responds to children across the country who need support in order to continue their education, offering immediate and concrete assistance in the form of school scholarships. Through this program, urgent help is provided especially to children at risk of dropping out due to extreme poverty, an unfortunate social context, or social problems faced by their families.
"School changes the story of poor children and keeps them away from cold, hunger, and hardships. There, they discover their potential and gain momentum towards the future! Only through education can they break free from the vicious circle of poverty, hope for a better life, and become a resource for their community. When companies choose to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds to go to school, it is not just a sponsorship, but a sustainable investment in the community." — Ioana Petrea, Communication and Fundraising Director.
Through the School Scholarships project, the Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation and Yardi Romania support children from disadvantaged communities in Cluj County to continue their education and properly integrate into society. The 40 children supported throughout 2020 are enrolled in state-run pre-university education and predominantly live in small rural communities. The social scholarships provide children with essential educational materials and supplies, clothing and footwear, sufficient and healthy food, hygiene products, accommodation, meals, or transportation to boarding schools for children attending schools in other towns, and integration into after-school programs.
Over its 30 years of activity, The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation has supported the education of disadvantaged children and provided the opportunity for a better life to 30,000 children from over 4,900 families, as well as supported 647 local NGOs through dedicated programs such as the Special Fund for Children, Generations Centers, My Cause, Investment in Rural Areas, and Generations School.
