500 children from disadvantaged backgrounds reconnected with school
During the period of social isolation, many children from rural areas and low-income families lost connection with school, their teachers, and classmates, including the snack or meal they used to receive at school or at after-school centers. In this context, many families also lost their source of income, making their living conditions increasingly difficult. Reconnecting children supported through social projects with school was a priority for The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation, which provided equipment, internet access, and online programs to over 500 children.
Most of the children included in the social and educational programs run by The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation were heavily affected, both in terms of living conditions and school interruption, due to the lack of equipment and internet access. Over 500 children received support to continue their education in Bucharest, Bacău, Cluj Napoca, Galați, Turnu Măgurele, Târgu Neamț, and the localities of Nicorești (Galați), Nicolae Bălcescu (Bacău), Cumpăna (Constanța), Mărculești (Ialomița), Cenade (Alba), Firiza (Maramureș), Zurbaua (Ilfov), and Reteag (Bistrița), with this initiative aiming to prevent school dropout.
The social scholarships were provided as financial support through the Special Fund for Children, to cover the immediate needs of families in precarious situations. In rural areas, children who did not have equipment or online access were provided with 350 tablets and internet SIM cards. Coordinators of after-school type social centers were trained to use the educational platform School in a Suitcase, through the Investment in Rural Areas project. Meanwhile, in the virtual space of the Generations Center in Sector 6, the 50 children continued with individual tutoring, English clubs, lessons in good manners, interactive games, reading, fables, and communication activities.
To ensure that these children are not left behind by school and society once again, The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation joined forces with funders such as the Vodafone Romania Foundation, Raiffeisen Bank and Yardi Romania.
Over its 30 years of activity, The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation has supported the education of disadvantaged children and provided the opportunity for a better life to 30,000 children from over 4,900 families, as well as supported 647 local NGOs through dedicated programs such as the Special Fund for Children, Generations Centers, My Cause, Investment in Rural Areas, and Generations School.
