The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation raises funds to support lonely elderly people

Up to 20,000 elderly people could receive help through the expansion of social services and the coverage area of projects dedicated to seniors, carried out by The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation. Companies can direct 20% of their tax due to the state to support a social cause, and individuals can sign up for a monthly donation at fundatiaregala.ro/. The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation will use the funds obtained in this manner to help elderly people facing difficult life situations.

Over 1 million seniors in Romania live alone, and following the onset of the pandemic crisis, The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation recorded the highest number of requests for support in 2020. For many elderly people, social distancing means the lack of essential help—such as personal care, the procurement of food and medicine—or even the complete absence of anyone to talk to. Because the number of those seeking help is constantly growing, the Foundation aims to assist up to 20,000 seniors through its projects and a network of social partners. For such support, which requires additional resources, the Foundation calls upon the involvement of companies and individuals.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, nearly 5,000 seniors—many affected by physical immobility, chronic illnesses, or material shortages—have received practical, material, or emotional help through The Fund for the Elderly. Relying on sponsorships and donations, the Foundation has created a network of social services active in various communities dedicated to supporting the elderly, mobilized hundreds of volunteers, expanded social projects into new geographic areas, and launched new services involving its own team of social workers and psychologists. Elderly people in difficulty have thus benefited from sanitary and protective equipment, aid packages with essential goods, free home delivery of groceries or medicine, social counseling and guidance toward available community support services, home care, practical help in the house, as well as constant emotional support or free psychological counseling.

Companies in Romania benefit from an important tax facility through which they can bring about a positive change in society—directing 20% of the tax paid to the state toward a social cause. This amount can be directed toward The Fund for the Elderly, through which The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation manages urgent requests and resolves the most serious cases at a national level. The value of the sponsorship from a company can be:

20% of the profit tax or 0.75% of the turnover (whichever is lower) for companies taxed on profit
20% of the income tax for companies taxed on income (micro-enterprises)

The funds obtained will continue to be used by the Foundation for:

  • Identifying resources or solutions to requests made by older people;
  • Facilitating access to support services such as home care or practical assistance;
  • Providing psychological counseling and emotional support to seniors with depression or anxiety through specialists;
  • Alleviating loneliness for older people who no longer have family or a support network;
  • Facilitating the home delivery of medicine or groceries through volunteer networks or local NGOs;
  • Support and equipment for home caregivers and community social workers;
  • Material assistance through products or social vouchers;
  • Involving seniors who wish to become active again as volunteers for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Last but not least, part of these funds will be used for festive home-delivered menus and organizing actions to bring back the spirit of the approaching Holidays to the elderly.
