Generations Exhibitions – a photographic journey of intergenerational projects developed in 15 communities across Romania
On July 9, The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation invites Bucharest’s elderly and children to the Generations photo exhibition, hosted by Roaba de Cultură in Herăstrău Park. The exhibition presents a collection of moments captured at the Generations Center in Bucharest, where elderly volunteers support children in the community, sharing their experience and passions through intergenerational workshops and clubs. Similar exhibitions are taking place simultaneously in 14 other localities, where intergenerational projects carried out during the 2020–2021 school year involved 172 elderly volunteers for the benefit of 623 children.
The Bucharest event starts at 5:00 PM and includes creative workshops organized by the elderly volunteers of the Generations Community Center, an artistic program offered by scholarship holders of The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation, a raffle with prizes consisting of children’s books offered by Editura Litera, and other surprises for children and grandparents. The photo exhibition in Herăstrău Park is open to the public from July 5 to July 11.
The exhibition Generations is part of a broader campaign that promotes intergenerational collaboration and active ageing through volunteering. Through photographs taken as part of projects supported by the Royal Margareta of Romania Foundation, the diversity and complementarity of relationships between young and older people are illustrated, as well as the importance and role that each generation plays in building a sustainable society.
The Generations exhibition will also take place simultaneously in 14 other towns across the country, where children and elderly people take part in intergenerational activities aimed at supporting school performance as well as vocational and personal development, funded through the national program “Generations Centers.” The images, emotions, and intergenerational relationships were captured in after-school day centers in each community by two photographers passionate about doing good – Ana Călin and Franco Godini.
The results of a national study conducted by The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation show that almost half of the elderly in Romania experience an acute sense of uselessness after retiring from professional activity. At the same time, the school dropout rate is very high among children from disadvantaged backgrounds. As a solution to these two issues, the Foundation developed an intergenerational methodology based on collaboration between generations, mutual exchange of values and experience, young people’s need for positive role models, and the elderly’s desire to remain active in the community. The intergenerational method involves engaging elderly volunteers in tutoring activities, clubs and educational workshops, vocational circles, and personal development or counseling sessions, for the benefit of children from disadvantaged families attending after-school social centers. Since 2015, the intergenerational method has been implemented in 31 day centers, and over 650 elderly volunteers have become active again through volunteering for more than 2,000 primary and middle school children.
In the 2020–2021 school year, intergenerational activities were carried out both on-site at the centers and online. The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation, together with Hochland Romania, Raiffeisen Bank, Metropolitan Life, and with the involvement of the Federation of Community Foundations in Romania (FFCR), supported the Generations program in 15 social day centers nationwide, where 172 elderly volunteers worked with 623 children and carried out 1,210 intergenerational sessions. Through the intergenerational method, children improved their school performance, gained new vocational and social skills, and made new friends, while the elderly volunteers regained a sense of self-worth and well-being.
Additionally, between December 2020 and April 2021, remarkable elderly professionals from various fields hosted online workshops for children from the Generations Centers, highlighting the value that the transfer of knowledge and experience between generations brings to society. Personalities such as explorer Uca Marinescu, actors Cristina Deleanu and Eugen Cristea, visual artist Ileana Dana Marinescu, Dr. Radu Dop, researcher Dan Farcaș, performer Tiberiu Ceia, composer Horia Moculescu, and singer Gabriel Cotabiță shared with children the secrets of fascinating professions, as well as the challenges and privileges involved.
